As the nights draw in and the first frosts start to appear, there’s nothing better than the crackle of a real fire. But before winter truly sets in, it’s worth taking a little time to make sure your firewood and burner are ready for the months ahead. Here are some simple Autumn firewood tips and tricks from me, Declan at Firewood Store Tewkesbury to help you stay warm, efficient, and ready for the cold.
1. Restock Before the Rush
Once the first cold snap hits, demand for logs always spikes — and so do delivery times.💡 Tip: Order early so you’ve got your store topped up before the busy period. Our kiln-dried Ash and Oak are available in 10, 15, and 25 net bundles — or go for the 50/50 Ash & Oak mix for the perfect balance of heat and burn time.
2. Keep It Covered, Keep It Dry
If your logs are stored outside, make sure they’re protected from autumn rain.
Stack them on pallets or a raised base.
Cover just the top, not the sides — so moisture can escape.
Leave a small gap from fences or walls for airflow.
💡 Bonus: We offer free stacking when we deliver, so you can be sure your wood’s stored properly from day one.
3. Warm Up Your Stove the Right Way
A cold stove can cause smoky starts and poor burns.💡 Trick: Light a small kindling fire first to gently warm the flue. Once there’s a steady draw, add your main logs. It’ll catch faster and burn cleaner.
4. Try the Upside-Down Fire Method
This one’s a game changer. Stack your biggest logs at the bottom, medium in the middle, kindling and a firelighter on top. It burns from the top down — producing less smoke, more heat, and fewer restarts.
5. Mix Woods for Maximum Efficiency
Ash burns bright and hot, while Oak burns slowly and steadily.💡 Tip: Our 50/50 mix combines the best of both — instant heat with long-lasting embers to keep the room cosy all evening.
6. Don’t Forget Your Kindling & Firelighters
It’s easy to overlook these when stocking up, but they make starting fires so much easier — especially when it’s cold and damp outside.💡 Tip: Grab a few extra nets of our birch kindling and non-toxic wood-wool firelighters — they light quickly and smell great too.
7. Book Your Chimney Sweep
Before the winter burn season begins, make sure your chimney or flue is clear of soot. A clean flue = better draw, higher efficiency, and safer burning.
8. Keep Glass Sparkling
Sooty stove glass? Use a damp cloth dipped in cold ash — it cuts through residue instantly, leaving the glass clear so you can enjoy the flames.
